Planoly vs Buffer: choose for the accounts you actually manage
Compare Planoly and Buffer by account mix, approval needs, automatic publishing and reporting. See which requirements change the plan you need.

Every Monday we run every tracked search through four checks: buyers are looking for a tool, demand is rising, advertisers pay real money for every click, and a focused new site can still reach the first page. The few that pass are that week's openings.

Start with your account list. Planoly groups accounts into social sets, while Buffer charges by connected channel on its paid plans. Managing one brand across several networks is a different purchase from managing several brands on Instagram alone.
If approval before publication is essential, include Buffer Team in your shortlist. If arranging an Instagram feed is central to your work, try Planoly's grid planner. Neither choice should rest on the old assumption that Planoly only handles visual networks: it also lists LinkedIn and TikTok among its supported channels.
This comparison uses current product documentation, not a hands-on reliability or engagement test.
Your account mix changes the price comparison
Planoly defines a social set as up to one account on each supported network. Its Starter plan includes one set and one user; larger plans include more sets and users. Buffer's paid pricing is per channel, with team features determined by the plan. Check the selected billing period when comparing quotes. Planoly plans, Buffer plans
Suppose you manage one Instagram account, one LinkedIn account and one TikTok account for a single business. Those fit the network mix of one Planoly social set. Three Instagram accounts for three businesses require multiple sets, despite having the same total account count. Buffer's comparison starts with three connected channels in either case, then the features and access you need.
Write down the accounts before opening a pricing calculator. Add the people who need access and whether they must approve posts. A low starting price tells you little until the quoted plan covers that whole list.
| Your requirement | Where to start | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| One brand across several networks | Compare one Planoly set with the required Buffer channels | Supported account types and total plan cost |
| Several accounts on the same network | Count Planoly sets and Buffer channels separately | Extra sets, users and billing period |
| Approval before publication | Evaluate Buffer Team | Permissions for the drafter and reviewer |
| Instagram feed planning | Try Planoly's grid planner | How it handles your actual post formats |
| Client reporting | Inspect a sample report in each product | Required metrics, history and export access |
Check who can publish without review
Buffer documents channel-specific access that can require a teammate to submit drafts for approval. Inviting users and enforcing that review are Team-plan features; Free and Essentials are single-user plans. Publishing permissions and Community permissions can differ for the same teammate. Buffer's permission guide
That makes Buffer Team worth evaluating when a contractor drafts posts and someone else must sign them off. Test the roles you intend to use: the drafter should be able to prepare the work without being able to bypass the required review.
Planoly's pricing establishes how many users a plan includes, but the documentation reviewed here did not establish an equivalent enforced approval flow. Confirm that workflow before buying for a team. Shared access and mandatory review are separate requirements.

A calendar entry may still need someone at their phone
Planoly distinguishes automatic posting, reminder posting and manual planning. A reminder asks someone to finish publication; a manual entry can remain a calendar placeholder without a notification. Pick the mode that matches how available your team will be at the scheduled time. Planoly posting modes
Planoly supports automatic Instagram carousel posting, subject to account and format requirements. Its Instagram guide identifies Business or Creator accounts connected to a Facebook Page as eligible, while personal accounts are excluded. Stories have additional restrictions. A broad claim that Planoly cannot auto-post carousels would be wrong. Planoly Instagram requirements
For either scheduler, check the exact post you want to publish. An ordinary image, a carousel and a video using native music may follow different routes. During evaluation, establish which posts can go out unattended and which require a person to finish them. Use that result when planning your workload; a supported network alone doesn't answer the question.
Buffer's analytics are changing
Buffer has announced that Analyze will retire on October 7, 2026, directing users to Insights. Its transition guide says Insights does not yet include the old custom report builder, audience demographics or best-time-to-post recommendations. If you need those for client reports, check the replacement before committing. Buffer's Analyze transition guide
The blanket claim that Buffer only measures posts published through Buffer is also incorrect. Its Analyze documentation describes collecting natively published X posts, with delays and limits. That doesn't mean every metric is available for every account or network.
Insights has its own channel restrictions, and the metrics in exports depend on what each network provides. Compare a sample report against the fields you actually send to clients. Check who can export it, how much history appears and whether native posts are included for your account type. Buffer Insights documentation
Apply the same check to Planoly. A general analytics feature label is too broad to establish that either tool can replace your current reporting process.
Test a normal working week
Choose the post formats you use regularly and run them through your intended process. Include a revision after review and a report you would be comfortable sending to a client. If Instagram layout matters, inspect how the planned posts appear together. Record any steps that still require the native app.
For a solo operator, the best fit may come down to account mix and planning preference. For a team, permissions and reporting can rule out a plan before price becomes decisive. Compare the subscriptions that cover those requirements, then choose the one that leaves you with a workable publishing routine.
