How do content websites make money?
This compares three ways a content site earns: advertising priced per thousand pageviews, affiliate commissions on referred purchases, and paid subscriptions.
How the calculation works
Ads = pageviews ÷ 1,000 × page RPM. Affiliate revenue = visits × purchase conversion × commission. Subscription MRR = existing paying subscribers × monthly price.
Worked example
50,000 pageviews at $10 RPM yield $500. 20,000 visits at 0.5% purchase conversion and $20 commission yield $2,000. 100 paying subscribers at $15 yield $1,500 MRR.
Assumptions and limitations
These are alternative gross-revenue scenarios, not a combined earnings promise. Traffic units differ by model. Costs, refunds, churn, taxes and ad blockers are excluded. No website lookup or private traffic data is used.
Frequently asked questions
What is page RPM?
Revenue per thousand pageviews, across the whole page. It differs from an ad network's CPM, which is the price of a thousand ad impressions; a page can show several ads or none.
Can I add the three results together?
Only if your site really runs all three at those rates. They are shown separately because the same visit rarely yields full ad, affiliate and subscription value at once.
Why does it ask for both pageviews and visits?
Advertising pays per page shown; affiliate sales happen per visit. One visit often includes several pageviews.
Are costs included?
No. These are gross revenue scenarios. Content, hosting, refunds, platform fees and taxes come out of them.
