What people use Similarweb for, and when to look elsewhere

Similarweb Web Intelligence estimates traffic and engagement for websites and is aimed at marketers, researchers and SEO or PPC teams. Its self-service packages for entrepreneurs start with Competitive Intelligence at $125 a month billed annually or $199 month to month, covering one user, three months of history, traffic and engagement, customer demographics, marketing channels and competitor alerts. Competitive Intel & SEO & AEO costs $333 billed annually or $399 monthly and adds keyword research, rank tracking, site audit, backlinks and AI visibility, with six months of history. The package that adds ad intelligence costs $542 or $649. Each package offers a free trial, and business packages are quoted by sales (similarweb.com packages page, checked 29 September 2026).

People switch for a few reasons. Some mainly need organic search data, which SEO suites cover alongside rank tracking. Some want to know where an audience spends time rather than how many visits a site gets. Others need only a direction check, or the entry price and the three-month history window do not fit their budget or question.

Every tool in this guide, Similarweb included, models traffic for sites it cannot measure directly. Two tools will often give different numbers for the same domain, so compare trends and definitions rather than treating any single figure as exact.

Semrush Traffic & Market: the closest like-for-like option

Semrush sells traffic analysis as a separate Traffic & Market toolkit. The Pro plan lists traffic overview, market landscape, acquisition channel mix, top pages and conversions, and competitor alerts, with historical and worldwide data for up to 100 competitors. It costs $289 a month on both the monthly and annual views of the pricing page, and the monthly view offers a free trial (semrush.com pricing page, checked 29 September 2026). Its product page adds benchmarking across 190+ markets and audience insights.

It is the nearest match to Similarweb's competitive intelligence package in scope. At monthly billing it costs more than Similarweb's entry package, and it is priced separately from Semrush's SEO plans, so buying both for keyword work adds to the bill.

Ahrefs: competitor search traffic, keywords and backlinks

Ahrefs Site Explorer shows where a site's traffic comes from, its top pages and keywords, its appearances in AI answers, the sites linking to it and its paid search activity (ahrefs.com, checked 29 September 2026). That makes it a fit for SEO questions about a competitor: which pages and keywords bring them search visitors, and who links to them.

With monthly billing, Lite costs $129 a month with six months of history, Standard $249 with two years and Advanced $449 with five years; Enterprise is $1,499 a month on an annual commitment. A $29 Starter plan covers basic keyword and competitor lookups, and Ahrefs Free gives site owners limited access to Site Explorer. The pricing FAQ points to the free product instead of a trial (ahrefs.com pricing page, checked 29 September 2026).

Ahrefs describes a competitor's traffic through search, AI answers, links and ads. If you need total visits across every channel, engagement metrics or audience demographics, confirm the plan covers them before you switch.

SE Ranking: search competitor research at a lower entry price

SE Ranking's competitor research shows a domain's organic and paid keyword rankings, monthly clicks estimated with AI, the estimated cost of that traffic, ad history and backlinks (seranking.com, checked 29 September 2026). It sits inside a broader SEO platform with rank tracking and site audits.

Core costs $129 a month or $103.20 a month billed annually, and Growth costs $279 or $223.20. Enterprise is custom. Both self-service plans start with a 14-day free trial that needs no card (seranking.com pricing page, checked 29 September 2026).

It is a reasonable choice for a small team that wants SEO tooling and search-based competitor estimates on one bill. Like the other SEO suites, it is built around search, so it will not replace a full view of a competitor's visits across all channels.

SparkToro: where an audience spends its attention

SparkToro starts from an audience rather than a domain. You describe an audience in a sentence, and its reports show demographics, the social accounts they follow, websites, podcasts, YouTube channels, subreddits and search keywords (sparktoro.com, checked 29 September 2026).

The free plan allows 3 previews a month. Personal is sold only as an annual plan at $450 a year. Business costs $150 a month or $1,344 a year, and Agency costs $300 a month or $2,700 a year. The API is a separate pay-as-you-go product (sparktoro.com pricing page, checked 29 September 2026).

Use it when your real question is where to reach people, for example which publications or communities to pitch. Its reports are about audiences, so they will not tell you how many visits a competitor's site received last month.

Google Trends: a free check on brand interest

Google Trends is free and opens without signing in (trends.google.com, checked 29 September 2026). Comparing two brand names over time and by region shows whether interest in a competitor is rising or falling.

Google scales each result from 0 to 100 relative to all searches in that place and period (support.google.com, checked 29 September 2026), so it shows direction, not visits. Brand names that are also common words give noisy results, and nothing here breaks traffic down by channel or page.

Exploding Topics: a discovery list of growing startups

Some people use Similarweb to spot companies that are growing quickly. Exploding Topics approaches that from the trend side: its Investor plan at $99 a month adds a trending startups list, trend forecasting and CSV export, and every plan has a 7-day free trial (explodingtopics.com pricing page, checked 29 September 2026).

The pricing page describes startups by their growth signals and does not list per-domain traffic analysis for a site you choose. Treat it as a way to find names worth researching, then check those companies in a traffic tool.

Night Watcher: growth and pricing for tracked AI companies

Night Watcher, the product behind this site, does not do full-site competitive traffic analysis. You cannot enter any domain, and it has no rank tracking, site audit, backlink data or audience demographics. If you need those, the tools above are a better fit.

What it does is track a set of AI companies. Each profile shows modeled monthly visits across all channels, the change on the previous month, traffic history, total visits and search visits labelled separately, channel mix, product pricing, positioning, competitors and revenue scenarios you can adjust. Traffic figures are modeled estimates refreshed monthly, and revenue scenarios are assumptions, not reported sales. It also lists weekly openings: rising commercial searches with estimated ad-click costs and a less dominant first page.

Builder costs $49 a month or $490 a year, Investor $149 or $1,490 and Desk $399 or $3,990 for five seats. There is no free trial. If you have not found an opening worth building within 7 days of your first payment, you can ask for a refund of the first month (1/12 of the price on annual plans). Free public pages show ten openings a week and monthly rankings of the fastest-growing AI companies, and a free weekly email carries two openings and two growing AI companies.

How to choose

Write down whose traffic you need and through which channel. For total visits and engagement on any domain, stay with Similarweb or compare it with Semrush Traffic & Market. If your question is about organic search, Ahrefs and SE Ranking give keyword and backlink detail. SparkToro answers where an audience spends time. Google Trends gives a free direction check. If you are specifically comparing AI companies and their pricing, Night Watcher covers that set.

Test each shortlisted tool on a domain you have real analytics for, usually your own site. Comparing each estimate with your actual numbers shows how far off that tool tends to be for sites of your size and category.

Then compare the terms that change the price: monthly versus annual billing, months of history included, number of users, countries covered and export limits. Record the price and the date you checked it.
